Middle Tennessee March report from Andre Whitehead

The state tournament begins on Wednesday. Here are some highlights how the season closed along with some big-time efforts from the district, region and sub-state games.

HEADLINES

Daniel Cochran (Brentwood) had as fine a high school career as any Bruin ever. Cochran, a University of Chicago signee, ended the season with a flurry of buckets including 24 against Centennial, 30 against Columbia Central, a 33 spot against Warren County in the region opener and then a 28-point monster effort against Hillsboro lifting his squad to a state tourney berth.  By the way he also secured his spot as the schools All Time Leading Scorer.

Jett  Montgomery (Independence) has his team back in the state tournament. The Southern Mississippi signee finished the season strong with a 28-point effort against Summit and a 25 piece against Brentwood.

Landon Bryant (LaVergne) is a name everyone should know, if you don't you will soon. The junior was brilliant down the stretch scoring 24 against Oakland in the region opener and helping lead his squad to a spot at the state tournament.

Landon Hankemeier (Rossview) and Jacob Edwards (Rossview) were instrumental in helping the Hawks secure a big win against state power Cordova and a trip to the state tournament. Hankemeier got it fired up first with a 25 spot against Springfield while Edwards showed his worth with a 32 spot against Kirkwood in the district title game.

SCORING EXPLOITS

Tyler Tanner (Brentwood Academy) concludes his outstanding career falling just short of another state title. Tanner was at his best in the playoffs including a 34 spot against CPA, 28 points against Pope Prep and a 36 point effort against Knoxville Webb in the state tournament opener. Congrats on an outstanding career.

George McIntyre (Brentwood Academy) may have committed to play on the gridiron but his hoop skills are pretty solid. The junior wing came on huge down the stretch dropping 26 against CPA and adding 27 against Pope Prep.

The future is bright down in Pickett County. The Bobcats may have come up short in their quest for a state tourney bid but their youngsters will be something to behold the next couple of seasons. Check out Jacob Amonett (Pickett County) who dropped a 29 spot on perennial power Clay County and freshman sensation Nathaniel Cobb (Pickett County) who put a 28 spot on state tourney participant Gordonsville.

Auden Slaughter (Santa Fe) has been a mainstay on this list the past two seasons. The junior will stake his claim in the coming weeks as his Wildcats will be showcased at the state tournament after some of his scoring exploits in the games leading up to this week. Look at 34 against Richland, 44 against Eagleville, 43 against Huntland and 37 against Fayetteville.

Ty Cobb (Upperman) has created a buzz that will be on display at the state tournament this week. The freshman phenom was instrumental in helping the Bees their way to the big house. Along the way he dropped a 33 burger on Marshall County.

MILESTONES

Cade Capps (Stone Memorial) found time to drop a 26 piece on Central Magnet in district play and supplanted himself past the 2.000-point barrier for his burgeoning hoops career.

Tylan Lewis (Independence) is a joy to behold. The junior guard is a terror on defense and helped lead his squad back to the state tournament. Lewis etched his name into school history moving past the 1,000-point barrier for his career.

Macon Adkison (Santa Fe) was big for the Wildcats down the stretch helping them secure a spot in the state tourney later this week. He also moved his way past the 1,000-point mark in his junior season.

Josh Heard (Cookeville) has been so good for the Cavaliers this season. The team will make the trek to the state tournament later this week and Heard, a Lincoln Memorial signee, etched his name at the top of charts becoming the schools all-time leading scorer.
