Nick Weatherspoon eyes three vists

One of the most explosive lead guards in America in the 2017 class is about to hit the road in the coming weeks in seeing two SEC programs and one that is a bit off the map compared to his current locale. Nick Weatherspoon, a 6-foot-2 guard from Jackson, Mississippi, was a major stock booster this past summer on the Adidas circuit playing up a year on the 17-under level with the MBA Hoops squad and because of it, saw a giant uptick with his recruitment.

What Weatherspoon brings to the floor at the point guard spot is an elite first step in getting past the first line defender on the perimeter and then scoring the ball at the basket with athleticism and toughness. He has incorporated a mid-range game and is difficult to stop off the high-ball screen. The Mississippi native is more than willing to lock up his man on the defensive end and with the use of great lateral skills and a longer set of arms, Weatherspoon has the chance to be a high level, two-way producer at the next level.

After a solid summer, the recruiting front has begun to pick up. Among those that are hot on his trail include the likes of LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Portland, Baylor, UConn, and Florida State. However, it is three programs that he has eyes on in visiting in the coming weeks.

On Saturday, September 5, Weatherspoon will head to LSU and get a chance to see what Johnny Jones and his program can offer. The following week, along with the likes of grassroots teammate Tyson Carter and Prestonwood Christian big man Schnider Herard, the junior guard will get a glimpse of the Mississippi State program. To shake things up a bit, a visit to Portland is being set up at the end of the month. “They offered me right after Vegas. I like how they play up and down, play defense full-court, and the weather on the west coast.”

Attending Velma Jackson High School, the junior floor general lives only a 30-minute drive from Starkville, Mississippi, of which of course is the home of Mississippi State University. The Bulldogs will showcase Weatherspoon’s brother, Quinndary, this year on the basketball squad, and when asked as to who the 6-foot-2 guard is hearing from the most, Weatherspoon replied by saying, “Mississippi State. I really like them.” Speaking on the work that the staff has done with his brother’s shot mechanics and in helping him put on 20 pounds done through vigorous work in the weight room, it would seem as if the in-state recruit might be leaning towards the SEC program, though he remains open with the process.

When it does come time to select a college, Weatherspoon will bank on three factors in selecting an appropriate home and fit. “A good bond with the coaches, how they play defense, and who is coming and leaving the program.”

With visits ahead to LSU, Mississippi State, and Portland, things are just beginning with the 6-foot-2 guard out of Jackson and is someone that can be looked upon as a top-75 recruit in 2017.
