Patterson studies players, improves game

Transforming into a student of the game is nothing new for Avery Patterson.

The senior guard watches from every person he can to learn how to play the point guard spot. Patterson takes a little bit from everyone’s game. His desire is to add something new to his game.

Patterson’s attention to these details has helped garner attention from a number of schools looking for a floor leader. He has cut his list down to Western Kentucky, Tulane, California and Boston University. He has visits tentatively set for Tulane and Western Kentucky within the next two months.

“The conversations have been good,” Patterson said. “It has been real comfortable talking about everything.”

Some of the players Patterson has studied in order to add to his game have been Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan and Miami’s Shane Larkin. Each one of them appeals to Patterson because they are built similar to him in so many ways. However, he likes Canaan’s mid-range pull up on a dime as it has made him effective. Larkin’s change of speed made him one of college basketball’s best points. He also sift works the pick-n-roll well while sing other teammates on the floor.

“When I watch games I am looking for different things on the floor,” Patterson said. “I realize what I need to work on in order to get better at the next level. I have been looking for different things more as a coach than a player.”

Those are things good players do on the basketball court. They look for things that will help them change and become an extension to the team. Patterson wants that relationship to extend beyond the court.

He wants to make sure the campus he selects has a family atmosphere.

“I want to make sure I am making the right decision academically,” Patterson said. “I just want to know I will enjoy the professors and my classes. Basketball-wise, I am looking for a family atmosphere.”

Well, you can rest for sure Patterson will study up on exactly what he wants to do moving forward.
